I started working on the Latin translation for Mastodon tonight. Thought it best to begin with the single-word-strings and had to create a word-list for Mastodon first. What is “to mute” in Latin? What is “to block”? What is “timeline”, “profile”, “server”?

There are some strings that seem to be much easier (”Vote”, “Close”, “Bot”), but only as long as we all agree on the Latin chosen in certain contexts - and I expect that to be the main problem as soon as more people get involved. Luckily the other languages have these problems, too.

For now, about 3% of the en.json file are translated.

Since yesterday, December 15th 2022 it is finally possible to work on an official Latin translation of the Mastodon UI.

I have created a new project page on LatinUI to collect all information and resources needed for this translation.
